Conservation Policy and Regulations

1. Fly only Rule

The Kyle of Sutherlands rivers are subject to a Scottish Statutory Instrument (2003 No.230) making it illegal to fish with any form of bait or lure. These regulations came into force on 1st May 2003; they will have the effect of reducing the rod exploitation of the regions salmon stocks.

2. The Unified Conservation Policy

In 2003 the KSDSFB introduced a number of recommendations aimed at achieving a common approach to conservation within the region. These recommendations are known as the Unified Conservation Policy (UCP). The objective of the UCP is to increase the escapement of returning adults, especially multi sea winter fish, and in particular, the early running stocks including grilse which are now know to be an important element of the spring fish run. The UCP was established after a wide ranging consultation that took into consideration the current scientific advice on how best to protect the future of the regions fisheries.

  • After 15 June all fish over 65cm to be released
  • A target of returning 75% on the annual catch
  • Before 15 June only single hooks to be used
  • No treble hooks to be used at any time

A further recommendation of the UCP is that these guidelines should be a minimum requirement. Some proprietors and fishery managers will apply the recommendations in slightly different ways including, on some beats, the complete ban on killing any fish before 15 June. Fisherman should confirm the specific regulations for each beat.
